Toro and Friends: Onsen Town (トロとパズル, Toro to Puzzle) is a Match-3 Puzzle mobile game developed by BeXide and published by ForwardWorks (the mobile division of Sony Interactive Entertainment) for Android and iOS.

It was first released in 2019 in Japan for the Doko Demo Issyo series' 20th anniversary, then later released worldwide in English, Chinese, and Korean in 2020 which was published by PiG Corporation (under license from Sony).

The game's service ran until 2021. After the closure of the Japanese servers, an offline mode was added to the game and all story episodes were made available and removing all of the pay to win features.

Gameplay[]

Toro and Friends: Onsen Town is a fairly simple Match-3 Puzzle game featuring a fruity theme. To play the game, fruit must be cleared by matching three of the same fruit. In every puzzle there is a specific amount of items that must be removed from the game play area to beat the puzzle, such as a specific fruit or certain obstacles before the amount of turns run out.

To help in this task are a variety of Booster items that can help clear fruit and obstacles more easily. Boosters can be obtained by clearing a certain amount of fruit in a specific pattern or they can be added to the start of the puzzle by using one from the players cache of Boosters or by watching an advertisement.

Hindering progress are a selection of obstacles that usually must be removed to help clear a puzzle, such as crates that can be destroyed by clearing fruit next to them, or safety rails that must be destroyed with explosive Booster items, and gimmicks that can change how a puzzle must be beaten.

While the stages are all individually designed, the fruit placement is mostly random, so there is an element of luck in beating the puzzles. Turns can be extended infinitely by either spending coins or by watching advertisements.

Occasionally, some puzzles will have a Sub-Goal that require a certain amount of fruit or obstacles cleared to obtain. When obtained, they will reward the player with various boons such as Boosters or filling some of the Rainbow Gauge. Many times they can be cleared multiple times for additional rewards. Sometimes it may reward with required items such as Ducks.

Upon completion of puzzles, the player earns Stars and coins in regards to the difficulty of the puzzle. There are three puzzle difficulties: normal, hard and gruesome, which reward 50 coins and one Star, 100 coins and one Star, and 100 coins and two Stars, respectively.

Additional coins can be earned; after the puzzle is beaten, all the Boosters left on the board will go off and depending on the fruit they collect, the player earns additional coins, and extra Boosters are added for each turn left on the puzzle.

Coins can be used to purchase special items from the item shop, purchase Hearts, or to extend turns when they run out. They can also be used to purchase clothing and furniture items during events. Stars are needed in order to view episodes and make progress in the story.

Pokepi and Amatsu-Sora[]

Between puzzles, the player can explore the setting of the game, Amatsu-Sora, and interact with the Pokepi. At first, Amtasu-Sora is abandoned and desolate, but as the player makes their way through the story the town is fixed and cleaned up alongside the Pokepi. By exploring Amatsu-Sora, the player can see various phrases and comments from the Pokepi that can be seen living in the town.

Interaction with the Pokepi is standard Doko Demo Issyo fare; they can be taught words, and they will use these words not only through conversation but also in story scenes. The Pokepi also ask the player questions, and they can be answered with a word input. Pokepi can also be dressed up in various costumes, although most of these are locked in limited time events. The player can also decorate their home, a room at the Amatsu-Sora Inn. Furniture items are obtained through story progress and the player can set them within their home.

In puzzles, the player can set one of five Pokepi as a partner. The Pokepi partners are:

At the beginning of the game, only Toro is available: the rest are unlocked throughout chapter 3 of the story. As a partner, the selected Pokepi is present in the corner of the screen, and occasionally emote or dance. They can be tapped for various additional emotes as well. After puzzles they talk to the player and can sometimes ask questions too. There are no special advantages to the particular Pokepi; setting them as a partner is up to personal preference. The partner Pokepi also delivers the daily Fortune Reading, a login bonus where the player can obtain a random booster and a few words from the particular partner Pokepi.

2-12

Toro is worried because there's nothing on the hot spring's sign saying that it'll make him human.

Toro and Sora are at the roadside station, and Toro excitedly exclaims that he will become human in the hot springs.  Sora is excited for him to come back and return to him as a human, as they both run off.  This leads Toro to a sign saying "Fruit Hot Spring Manpuku", as he wonders what the effects of it are, as the sign warns not to go in if he has a lot of bruises, is sensitive to cold, has muscle pain, or hay fever.  But, it says nothing about turning into a human.  Despite this, Toro and the player enter the hot spring, as Toro enjoys the hot spring while eagerly waiting to become a human.  Despite this, Toro is still a cat, as Toro says that if he doesn't count to 100 while submerged up to his belly button, then it may not work, and tells the player to look forward to the next story for him to become human.

Episode 13: Fruit Hot Spring Manpuku Part 2[]

2-13

Toro meets a mysterious woman.

Toro is in the fruit hot spring again, and he is disappointed that he has been fooled because he is still a cat.  But, he doesn't mind, as the hot spring felt good and there's surely more hot springs around town that can make him a human, while stating that it's a human rule to put your hands on your hips and drink the player's taught drink quickly.  So, he wants to go buy the player's taught drink, and heads off to the shop nearby.  The shop is closed, so Toro and the player open it, while asking if anyone is there.  Suddenly, a mysterious human woman appears, and welcomes Toro and the player at the shop, as she murmurs that she can't wait to see someone again.  Toro asks the woman for the player's taught drink, but she says that she doesn't sell it.  Toro then asks if they sell a drink that will make him a human, but she isn't selling that either.  Toro sadly replies that it's a shame, but the woman does say that she heard of an old story in this town about a hot spring where cats became humans.  Toro, reinvigorated, asks her to tell the story, but she is hesitant.

Episode 14: Fruit Hot Spring Manpuku Part 3[]

2-14

Toro wearing the woman's kimono gift.

Toro once again asks the woman to tell him the story, but she says that she doesn't know the details, though the town still has many old stories and place names derived from cats.  So, she's sure there's a place in the town that can tell him the details of that old story.  Toro says that he'll go to look more places, but the woman warns him that it's dangerous and tells him to go home.  Toro is confused by this, as he wants to become a human as soon as possible, but the woman offers to give him a souvenir, and beckons him to come over.  She gives Toro a kimono, which delights him, as he feels that he has become more human from it.  The player then asks if she needs it, but the woman says that she doesn't need the kimono any more.  She then tells Toro to head home, and he does.

Episode 15: Good night nya[]

2-15

Toro and Sora drifting off to sleep.

Toro returns home to his room, and says that it's a human rule to say "nya" in this specific room after all.  Sora arrives soon after, and asks Toro about hot the fruit hot spring was.  Toro happily replies that it was warm and nice, as there were more baths then he expected, such as those names after the player's word choices.  Sora is pleased to hear this, but Toro is still disappointed that he was unable to become human.  Sora reassures him, however, as he's sure that there's more hot springs around town where he could become human, which reminds Toro that he had heard that there was an old story about a hot spring where cats became humans.  Sora, confused, says that he has never heard of the tale, but thinks that there may be clues around town.  Toro agrees, but he thinks that it is getting late, so he's going to sleep and looking for it tomorrow.  The player then wishes Toro and Sora good night, as the lights go out and they drift into slumber, with Toro murmuring that he wants to go to places on 2-Chrome he hadn't seen yet.

Toro's picture diary text:

"The warm fruit hot spring. I didn't become a human, but it felt good♥. Where is the "hot spring where cats become human"? Let's look for it again. Good night!"
